Buying Bitcoin in Canada: Halfway to the 2028 Halving
The countdown to Bitcoin’s next halvening is officially past the halfway mark. The Bitcoin network has officially crossed the halfway point to the next Bitcoin Halving expected in 2028.
With fewer than 100,000 blocks remaining until the next halving event, the countdown is on. According to current estimates, the next Bitcoin halving is expected around April 2028, when mining rewards will decrease from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block.
What Is the Bitcoin Halvening?
Every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, Bitcoin automatically reduces the amount of new BTC entering circulation by 50%. This event is known as the “halving” or “halvening”, depending on who you ask.
It’s built directly into Bitcoin’s code and is one of the main reasons Bitcoin is often compared to digital gold. Bitcoin’s total supply will never exceed 21 million coins.
A Quick Look Back at Previous Halvings
Here’s how Bitcoin’s block rewards have changed over time:
- 2009*: 50 BTC per block (Genesis Block)
- 2012: 25 BTC per block
- 2016: 12.5 BTC per block
- 2020: 6.25 BTC per block
- 2024: 3.125 BTC per block
- 2028 (estimated): 1.5625 BTC per block
Historically, Bitcoin halvings have often been followed by major market cycles and increased interest in crypto assets. While past performance never guarantees future results, previous halving periods have coincided with long-term growth in Bitcoin adoption and market activity.

Why Canadians Are Watching Closely
As Bitcoin issuance slows over time, many investors view halvings as an important milestone for Bitcoin’s long-term scarcity model.
For Canadians buying and selling Bitcoin and Ethereum, halving cycles have historically brought:
- Increased media attention
- Higher trading activity
- More institutional participation
- Greater awareness of digital assets overall
The 2024 halving was also the first halving cycle to occur after the launch of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, bringing even more mainstream attention to the crypto market.
